Coriolis Flow Measurement for Continuous Density and Mass Analysis in Critical Media

Quick Answer: A Coriolis mass flow meter measures mass flow and liquid density at the same time. For critical media, this means you can track concentration, blending ratio, or product quality without a separate densitometer. Silver Automation Instruments supplies Coriolis meters from DN15 to DN150 for hazardous and hygienic processes.

Why Continuous Density and Mass Analysis Matters in Critical Media

Many plants measure flow and density with separate devices. A magnetic flow meter gives volume flow. A densitometer gives density. But a critical fluid often changes with temperature, pressure, or concentration. A Coriolis meter combines both measurements in one sensor. That single sensor reduces flanges, wiring, and calibration points. In practice, a gas plant in Vietnam used a Coriolis meter to monitor amine solution density and mass flow at 40 bar. The alternative was a volume flow meter plus a nuclear densitometer. That meant more maintenance and more approvals.

Here is the thing. A Coriolis meter is not the cheapest flowmeter on the market. But if your process needs density and mass flow from one device, the Coriolis meter replaces two or three instruments. Most engineers skip the density signal at first. Then a batch drifts off spec. The density output often becomes the reason a plant keeps the meter.

What a Coriolis Meter Measures Directly

The meter drives a pair of tubes at a known frequency. Mass flow changes the phase shift between the tube ends. Density changes the resonant frequency. Temperature is measured with a PT100 sensor. From these three signals, the transmitter calculates mass flow, density, temperature, and derived variables like concentration or percent solids. Mass flow accuracy is often 0.1 percent of rate. Density accuracy can reach 0.0005 g/cm3. That level is enough for fuel blending, caustic dilution, and syrup brix control.

When to Use a Coriolis Meter for Critical Media

Use a Coriolis meter when the process value is not just flow. If you need kg per hour instead of m3 per hour, a Coriolis meter is the simplest choice. If you also need density at 0.001 g/cm3 repeatability, the case gets stronger. We have seen this on customer sites many times. A chemical batch goes wrong because concentration drifts. A mass flow meter with density output catches that drift in real time. The meter suits fluids such as acids, alkalis, solvents, paints, emulsions, syrups, and brines. For abrasive slurry, ask about straight tube designs and wear resistant options. For sanitary food lines, choose tri clamp connections and EHEDG compliant surfaces.

Last year a paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia asked us about solvent dosing at 6 bar. Viscosity changed from 10 cP to 80 cP between batches. A DN15 Coriolis meter held the mass flow setpoint stable without a separate viscosity correction.

Typical Operating Range for Silver Automation Instruments Coriolis Meters

We supply Coriolis flow meters in sizes from DN15 to DN150. Pressure ratings go up to 100 bar depending on body material and temperature. Temperature range is from minus 200 °C to plus 200 °C. Mass flow range covers about 0.4 kg/h on a small DN15 meter to 600 t/h on a DN150 meter. Liquid density range is 0 to 3000 kg/m3. Wetted parts can be 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C22, or Alloy 20. Process connections include flanges, tri clamp, and threaded. Transmitters support 4-20 mA HART, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, and pulse output. ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 approvals are available for gas and dust environments.

Industry Application Notes

Oil and gas. A Coriolis meter works for bunker fuel measurement, diesel blending, and light crude transfer. Density at 15 °C gives API gravity. Combined with mass flow, that tells you how much energy you loa
