Water Flow Rate Sensors: In-Line Volumetric Velocity Calculators for Factory Supply

Quick Answer: Silver Instruments supplies in-line water flow rate sensors that output volumetric flow, velocity, and totalized volume. Factory supply lines from DN15 to DN300 are often served by electromagnetic flowmeters with 4-20 mA HART or RS485 Modbus. Send your pipe size, flow range, temperature, and pressure for a matched model and price.

Factory water supply lines need stable measurement. A sensor that drifts or clogs creates false batch records, pump control errors, and high water waste. Silver Automation Instruments has supplied water flow rate sensors to chemical plants, food processors, pump skids, and utility lines across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

These sensors calculate volumetric velocity inside the pipe. The output gives live flow rate in m³/h or L/min plus totalized volume. Many models add pulse outputs for PLC counters. That matters in factory supply because billing and batching depend on totalized volume.

What We Mean by In-Line Volumetric Velocity Calculation

In-line means the sensor sits directly in the pipe run. No bypass loop is needed. Volumetric velocity is derived from flow rate divided by pipe cross section. If a sensor reports 36 m³/h on a DN80 pipe, the average velocity is about 2.0 m/s. Most Silver Instruments electromagnetic flowmeters read velocity from 0.1 m/s to 10 m/s with a calibrated accuracy of ±0.5% of reading.

Some sites ask only for velocity. Others need actual volume. Our converters display both. The local display can toggle between m/s, m³/h, L/min, and total m³. This helps maintenance teams check pump performance without opening the pipe.

Sensor Types for Factory Water Supply

Electromagnetic flowmeters are our default choice for raw water, potable water, cooling water, and wastewater. They have no moving parts, no pressure drop, and no strainer requirement. Standard sizes run from DN15 to DN300. Liners include hard rubber, PTFE, and EPDM. Electrodes can be 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C, titanium, or tantalum.

Ultrasonic flowmeters fit large pipe or retrofit jobs. Clamp-on models install outside the pipe wall. They work on DN25 to DN1200 lines. Accuracy is about ±1.0% of reading. They suit factory supply pipes where cutting into the line is not allowed during production.

Vortex flowmeters work on clean water and process water with stable flow. They handle temperatures up to 150 °C. We supply these for boiler feed water lines and steam condensate in small factories.

Oval gear flowmeters are positive displacement meters. They are not ideal for raw water with solids. But they measure low flow, high viscosity, and small dosing lines. Common use cases include additive water, glycol mix, and diesel supply on the same factory site.

Parameters That Decide the Sensor Model

In practice, most factory supply lines use 4-20 mA HART plus pulse. Some sites add RS485 Modbus RTU for SCADA or PLC. Send us these values before quoting: pipe size DN, flow range min and max, fluid type, temperature, pressure, conductivity, and required output. For electromagnetic flowmeters, the minimum fluid conductivity is about 5 µS/cm. Demineralized water below this needs a different sensor type.

If the line is in a solvent storage area, we can supply ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 certified transmitters.

Common Factory Supply Applications

We have seen a beverage plant in Vietnam replace a paddle wheel meter because starch buildup stopped the wheel. The new Silver Instruments electromagnetic flowmeter with an EPDM liner has run for 14 months without failure. That plant monitors water into syrup mixing tanks in 500 L batches.

A desalination plant contractor in Saudi Arabia asked for seawater flow sensors on high pressure feed lines. We supplied DN150 elect
