What a Field Audit Actually Requires

Field audits are not laboratory tests. You need a device that you can carry to a remote pump station, a chemical dosing skid, or a water treatment plant. In practice, most audit teams want a stable reading within five minutes, a data log for the report, and no process shutdown.


We have seen many customer sites where the installed meter cannot be removed. A magnetic flowmeter may be welded into a DN200 line. A Coriolis meter may be handling hot edible oil. The handheld ultrasonic tool clamps on the outside of the pipe. The transducers do not contact the fluid. That is the core advantage.


How the Ultrasonic Verification Tool Works on Site

The other receives it. The meter compares upstream and downstream travel time. The difference gives flow velocity.


This method works on carbon steel, stainless steel, PVC, PE, and copper pipes. The pipe wall must be clean and solid. Scale and air pockets will weaken the signal. For a DN100 carbon steel pipe with clean water at 25 degrees Celsius, the reading stabilizes in about 30 seconds. For a DN600 pipeline, you may need five to ten minutes to find the best transducer spacing.


Data logging matters for audits. The handheld tool should store flow rate, totalizer, signal strength, and timestamp. You can export the CSV file to a laptop. Auditors in Australia and the Middle East often attach this log to the inspection report.


Key Specifications for Field Audits

We recommend a clamp-on portable meter with a measuring range from 0.03 to 12 m/s. Accuracy should be 1.0 percent of reading for pipes DN50 and larger. For DN15 to DN40, accuracy may be 2.0 percent of reading. Repeatability is usually 0.2 percent. The standard transducer set covers pipe sizes from DN15 to DN6000. Wall thickness up to 50 mm is acceptable for most models.


Temperature range matters. Standard transducers handle fluid from -30 to 160 degrees Celsius. Some high temperature transducer sets work up to 200 degrees Celsius, but they cost more. For district heating audits or steam condensate lines, specify the high temperature version.


The display should show flow rate in kg/h, m3/h, L/min, or GPM. The signal strength display is critical. A weak signal causes unstable readings. Most engineers skip this part, but you need the signal quality meter on screen. The handheld unit should weigh less than 1 kg and run for at least 10 hours on one battery charge.
